it seems like in the first sentence you quoted from Guardian, 片 is being used as a measure word/classifier for the sky? I suppose everything needs a measure word and IIRC 片 is usually used for broad flat things like pieces of paper (and I guess it's also used for leaves in the second sentence) so it makes sense but is also weird.

Yes, apparently! "makes sense and also weird," exactly. It's one of those that I'm glad to be able to read but will probably just resort to 个 for when I need a measure word myself, not confident enough about its application...
