but why 草率 contains 草 is a mystery to me

Date: 2023-01-31 08:31 am (UTC)I learned "coarse, crude, rough" as one of the meanings of 草, so I assume that's the connection here? I haven't learned any other compounds where it has that meaning exactly, but looking around I do see 潦草, which apparently describes sloppy handwriting, and there also seem to be a few words like 草稿 (a sketch or rough draft) where it means "rough" in a way that's maybe similar to "careless/sloppy"...

Date: 2023-01-31 11:52 am (UTC)As the other comment noted on 草 – 草书 even (if memory serves) describes a style of calligraphy which just looks like "brush go swishhhhh" to me, so yeah there's an element of describing looseness(?) in some usages.
