第二年第十九天
Don't miss yesterday's two posts about 水果 and Guardian audio practice respectively!
语法
V + 不 + complement, "can't do X ~~" (bottom of page)
https://resources.allsetlearning.com/chinese/grammar/Potential_complement
词汇
草, grass; 草地, lawn (also goes nicely with yesterday's 水果 post, featuring 草莓) 草 cǎo, grass; 草地 cǎodì, lawn
https://mandarinbean.com/new-hsk-2-word-list/
Guardian:
这是怎么回事啊,他听不见, what's going on here? He can't hear me.
我看这山路一时半刻也修不好, I don't think this path can be fixed in just an hour or so [?]
你不是一直也想去那儿看看花花草草吗, don't you still want to go there and see flowers and grasses?
Me:
我看不清楚那个字,也许终于需要眼镜了吗。
如果规则说不要走在草地上,就跑步。

一定会打草惊蛇的
打草惊蛇 is one of my favorite 成语 - it came up in Border Town Prodigal a lot! :D
episode 12 has:
这么草率
but why 草率 contains 草 is a mystery to me

I learned "coarse, crude, rough" as one of the meanings of 草, so I assume that's the connection here? I haven't learned any other compounds where it has that meaning exactly, but looking around I do see 潦草, which apparently describes sloppy handwriting, and there also seem to be a few words like 草稿 (a sketch or rough draft) where it means "rough" in a way that's maybe similar to "careless/sloppy"...

Ah! Good to know! (Will I remember this...? 🤔)

As the other comment noted on 草 – 草书 even (if memory serves) describes a style of calligraphy which just looks like "brush go swishhhhh" to me, so yeah there's an element of describing looseness(?) in some usages.

:D I had to look up images of this to see if it was the style of calligraphy I immediately thought of and yes, it was! I'm in awe of those who can read it.

(😂 wingdings if it was calligraphy)
