For 难 I couldn't decide, so you get two quotes:

哈哈 of course, that would make more sense to us. I wonder why they didn't call it 石炭车 or something. (And in Japanese it's a demon of sorts!)

Isn't it? I don't think I ever made the connection before. (Japanese has a variety of words for "train" but 火车 is definitely not one of them...).

Works for me. I had good results in Japanese reading novels translated from English that I already knew really well, but haven't found the Chinese equivalent yet...

mm, the thing is I did it backward--I read a bunch of novels that I knew very well in English, translated into Japanese. Can't remember now which ones they were at first, but I think there was Anne McCaffrey and Diana Wynne Jones among others? Basically books I had read so many times in English that I could understand the Japanese even if I didn't actually know all the words.
