Interestingly, in the episode 9 scenes where Lin Nansheng and Zhu Yizhen discuss the books they're reading, they use 看 not 读.

I haven't seen The Rebel yet (I keep meaning to!), but from what I understand, I think 看书 is the typical term for reading books, and 读书 is more like "to study" (or "to be in school")? Like, "reading" in a more academic or purposeful way? I tried googling for a better description or reference, but answers from both advanced learners and native speakers seem to be all over the place, with some people saying that 读书 = "studying/being a student," and other people saying 读书 is more formal but can still mean "to read books" just the same as 看书. I feel like whenever I've heard 读书 it's been about studying, though...

Yes, that sounds likely, thanks for pointing it out. I know I've seen 看书 quite a bit more often. (I have some resistance to it because I'm so used to 读书, or rather 読書, to mean just "reading books" from Japanese. Shifting connotations, sigh)

Yeah, while I wouldn't say that 读书 only ever means studying, that's also the meaning I'd probably assume 99% of the time unless context indicates otherwise. Colloquially there's also expressions like 读书人 or 不是读书的料 which pretty much have Scholarly Endeavours™ baked in by implication, and 看 definitely does not work in these cases.
