格外 (+ 地) + adj./verb "especially X"

*The page text says "you will occasionally see 格外地 before an adjective," and then all their examples thereof are spelled 格外的, but I think 地 should be the correct version?
词汇
气, air/gas/breath; 空气, air/atmosphere; 气温, air temperature 气 qì, air/gas/breath; 空气 kōngqì, air/atmosphere; 气温 qìwēn, air temperature

Guardian:
进来以后要慎言慎行,格外小心, once inside you need to take great care with speech and behavior, be especially careful [literal translation; I think he's just saying "be especially careful" twice in two different ways]
你逃离地星原本只是向往新鲜的空气, if you originally left Dixing just to go to the fresh air
Me:
她最近格外地忙,我不想让你为了小事麻烦她。
今天的气温一直很高,好好喝水吧。

Date: 2023-09-18 11:37 pm (UTC)Huh! I think I would have expected 的 before an adjective, buuuut I also think Cantonese might be more selective than Mandarin about only using 地 before verbs? Maybe?? (Though now I'm looking back at this post on 的、地、得 and it looks like every instance of 地 is modifying a verb, so maybe that's also how it works in Mandarin? I'm going off of Canto and could also just be completely wrong, but I can't remember ever hearing something with 地 modifying an adjective rather than a verb...). I've never heard 格外 before in any case, so I really have no idea. I tried googling both terms, and 格外地 only turns up about 130 results... but then 格外的 has less than half as many as that, about 60. :/ It doesn't seem like it's all that common either way!

Date: 2023-09-19 11:04 pm (UTC)Interesting about Cantonese! My instinct is to say that 地 would also work before an adjective because it's basically an adverb marker, which allows it to modify adjectives or verbs, ie -ly, BUT I don't know how accurate this is and how much it's just cross-contamination in my head from English and Japanese. I guess the safe alternative is just to say 格外 without either 地 or 的???

Date: 2023-09-19 12:12 am (UTC)... Faced with this question, I feel like I have somehow entirely forgotten everything I ever knew about 的/地/得. /o\
