The Wiki says this is a verb but I refuse to believe it: I just think of it as a noun with which 是 is consistently omitted.
Guardian:
“先生贵姓？” “免贵姓沈，沈巍." (this one I almost didn't need the script for)
And the ridiculously formal reverse version:
"还没请教，你尊姓大名啊？" "额...昆仑."
My practice:
我两个好朋友都姓李。

尊姓大名 is an idiom in itself, and 姓 also crops up in quite a few other name-related idioms: 指名道姓 (to straight-up mention someone by name), 隐姓埋名 (to hide your name), 改名换姓 (to change your name)…
Tangentially related(?) term: 百姓 or 老百姓 for is a fairly oft-used term for commoners despite it apparently being, as I just learned, a possibly non-PC term in Japanese. Talk about language disagreements????

Date: 2022-02-24 11:49 pm (UTC)I've come across 老百姓 a couple of times in Chinese--I never thought of it as related to 百姓 in Japanese, but of course it is the same characters, duh. (My impression of 日语的百姓 is not so much non-PC as just a really old-fashioned way to refer to peasant farmers--"ploughman" or something like that maybe?--but I'll ask an actual Japanese person).

Yup, pretty safe to assume 尊-anything is… roughly sonkeigo level polite, I'd say? Possibly hilarious trivia: there's not just one but two idioms expressing the same question (the other is 姓甚名谁, which doesn't have the same formality attached to it but does sound weirdly literary instead).

I asked my 老公 “百姓って、農民?" and he said "Huh? Yeah" (he is used to me asking weird questions to which the explanation is usually "well, my 网友们..."), so I think it holds up. Maybe practically all the 老百姓 basically were farmers at the point the word traveled???

Hilariously, Baidu also informs me that 百姓 apparently used to mean nobility/officials in archaic use (like, pre-Warring States ancient) so that probably says something about when the text import happened…
