Tentative plan for the moment: choose a radical of the week (in some cases, more like a radical of the month or the season depending how many characters use it???) and cover a few characters from it daily? (Along with every-other-day grammar) People who were interested in seeing more radical/character-related content, let me know if this is something like what you had in mind, if not what else you'd prefer, if you recommend any other sites to link to, etc.

恭喜!咱们每天都学过了三年了!万分感谢大家一起来!

Today marks the beginning of Year Four (hopefully not a bad omen, knock wood) of this community! Thank you, subscribers and commenters and lurkers and people who drop by every now and then, for being around.

As usual, we face the problem of: what next? There are still many many vocabulary words to go, no problem, but we're starting to near the end of the Mandarin Bean grammar page (maybe another couple months' worth left). Go back and review the Grammar Wiki pages? Look for a different grammar site to work through? Something else, grammar-related or otherwise? Suggestions and requests are called for. Likewise, is there anything different/new you'd like to see here in general? Let me know.

祝大家有结果的一学年!

从今天开始第三年!谢谢大家一起来到!

Today marks two full years of posting regular Chinese grammar/vocabulary content! (Special thanks to trobadora who has posted in my stead when I was traveling etc.) This community now has 60 members and 70 subscribers (I never know what the difference is), which is pretty good for a tiny casual Chinese study site. Thank you very much for your interest!

I still plan to keep posting into year 3, as it's helpful for me myself--first we'll finish up the B2 grammar points, and after that I welcome suggestions. The Chinese Grammar Wiki does have a C1 grammar page, and while the content would be useful to know a lot of it is quite obscure (at least from my learner's perspective) and I'm not sure it needs to be prioritized. Go back and review some or all of previous points? Focus on points from another (where?) site? Dip into the Guardian script in order, for instance, or another resource (other dramas or movies? books? ???) for new/review grammar points as they come up? Please let me know what you would find interesting/helpful. (Please feel free to do so even if you never comment normally and never plan to, it's by no means a requirement!)

那大家好好生活,明天见~

As of yesterday we’ve been through the whole A2 grammar list on the Chinese Grammar Wiki, so based on previous polls, as of tomorrow we’ll start on the B1 list. I will also start adding a link per day to older posts starting from A1, so that anyone who wants to work on/review more introductory grammar can do so (if commenting, do please comment on the new posts, not the linked old ones). Let me know if this seems likely to work and/or with any other suggestions.

两百天快乐!恭喜咱们一直努力。 谢谢大家, many thanks everyone for following along. Two hundred days!

Coincidentally, we are getting near the bottom of the A2 grammar point list on the Chinese Grammar Wiki, and I’d like to know what people would like to do next when we finish them. This being a paid account through the kindness of an anonymous benefactor, we can have a poll.

This poll is anonymous.
Open to: Registered Users, detailed results viewable to: All, participants: 4

After finishing the A2 grammar page, we should

View Answers

Go on to B1-level grammar points
4 (100.0%)

Go back and review A1 and A2 point by point
0 (0.0%)

Go back and review selected points only from A1, A2
0 (0.0%)

Switch to a different grammar reference site (suggestions in comments/messages)
0 (0.0%)

Do something else altogether with regard to grammar (“)
0 (0.0%)

As for vocabulary we still have a ways to go on the HSK1 list, plus HSK2-6 after that, but if anyone has ideas on that point let me know as well.

Any other requests/suggestions also welcome! Also in general, while commenting is absolutely not required, just in case there is anyone feeling “I would comment more if only....”, please do message me etc. and let me know what you have in mind.

I’m going to be boring and predictable and celebrate day 200 with Zhu Yilong singing 太阳, just for general comfort. 无畏风雨,别忘记还有我站在这里…

咱们在这里一起练习了一百天了吧!厉不厉害?

One hundred days in a row may not be a lot in the grand scheme of language learning, but I think it's a pretty good start here. I am so grateful to the people who have been commenting here, often with immensely helpful knowledge and advice, as well as with thought-provoking questions, interesting quotations, and so on. I also appreciate very much the people who have been following along quietly, as the subscription list graaaadually increases! 万分谢谢大家。❤️

In administrative matters, let me know via comment here or DM if there's anything you would like to be different--tags? content? pinyin? should I keep aiming for daily posts or would once or twice a week be easier to deal with? And so on. I still haven't gotten to putting together a masterlist of useful links etc., as discussed previously, but it's on my list. As it were.

I'm also kind of curious to hear about people's goals and achievements with regard to Chinese, on large or small scales, everything from "hey, I understood this one line without looking at the subtitles! that felt really good!" to "passed X test" or "read Y novel cover to cover" and so on and so forth. Mine )

It's not 第七天, but in the spirit of the joys of amateurism, have Zhu Yilong accompanying himself on a Teresa Teng song: he has obviously practiced very hard and is feeling proud of himself for getting it mostly right.

咱们继续一边努力努力学习一边好玩吧!

Re: pinyin. People have suggested the Zhongwen browser extension (Firefox and Chrome links below) which allows hovering over hanzi characters to see the pinyin. This seems like the best compromise between people who would like to see it and people who would rather not? That said, if you would like to see pinyin here but can't easily deal with this extension for various reasons, comment/message/etc. and we'll see what other options there are.

Re: tags, pinyin issues included. People have kindly volunteered to help deal with tags; let me know what you think the ideal format would be...

Re: other: I think there should probably be a masterpost/masterpage somewhere that covers all the content posted in one big list/table/etc., but I'm not immediately envisioning what it would look like (or whether this can be handled by tagging, etc.). Tell me what would work for you.

when we're 六十四...

Administrative notes:
As suggested, for a while I will be offering a grammar point (we're up to A2 or so) and a vocabulary word (from the new HSK level 1 list) daily! Please feel free to use either or both (or neither) for your own practice as preferred.
Also I have created a sticky post (let me know if anything in it seems wrong or weird) and found a neat new idiom for the top-of-journal slogan (ditto).

语法 (grammar)
"about the same" with 差不多
https://resources.allsetlearning.com/chinese/grammar/Approximations_with_%22chabuduo%22

Let's stick to the first meaning (差不多 as predicate, just X and Y are about the same thing) for today.

词汇 (vocabulary) (I think)
爱好, hobby

Guardian:
这还差不多, that's about it
这地星人也是人。这审美和品位也都差不多嘛。(Dixingren, not so different from the rest of us).

My practice:
我和我老公的眼睛颜色差不多。
我们的三月,你们的五月的温度差不多。
他有很多爱好。

Hello, 你还好吗!Thank you for coming to take a look at guardian_learning, which is a community for shared Chinese language practice.

What we do and how it works:
I post once a day with a grammar point from the HSK/Chinese Grammar Wiki list and a beginner HSK vocabulary word, along with some sample sentences from Guardian (see below) and some practice of my own.
Anyone who would also like to practice writing is invited to come by and add a comment at any time, using the grammar point of the day and/or the vocabulary word of the day, or not as preferred (basically anything related to writing in Chinese is fine!). You can also post separately to the community any time you want to raise Chinese-language-related questions, thoughts, or discussion points.

Is knowledge of Guardian a requirement for taking part?
No, not at all! This community started as the idea of using the Chinese drama Guardian (镇魂) to study Chinese. Its purpose is no longer focused on the drama (although I still use the Guardian script for sample sentences for my own amusement), so being involved here is possible and encouraged whether or not you’re interested in Guardian in particular or cdramas in general.

What level is it for?
Please feel free to comment and/or make your own posts without hesitation, regardless of what level you are at. Beginning-level sentences and questions are excellent review/practice for everybody and often bring up really interesting points and references (and even if they didn’t, so what; if they’re useful for the person writing them, that’s good enough for this community). That said, if you are not comfortable commenting, or would rather post quotations rather than practice sentences, or would rather stick to 第七天 days, any and all ways to interact/follow along are fine. No stress.

So what’s a 第七天 day?
Once a week we review the grammar and vocabulary from the week instead of adding anything new; this review day is also a chance to share songs, sayings, study tools and other Chinese-related stuff we like.

Other general notes
・There are basically only two rules as far as I’m concerned: a) have some interest in Chinese study in some format, and b) treat other people cordially. So far we’re doing just fine on both counts.
・“Chinese” here generally refers to Mandarin/普通话, but we have a few people with interest/experience in Cantonese, Hokkien etc., and if people want to talk in/about other Chinese dialects etc. etc. please feel free!
・The basic grammar points are covered in the tags; I will try to come up with a more accessible way to search for grammar and vocabulary points covered, but I’m not there yet. (The 一天一橘 tag is just me liking dumb puns; 句子 (sentence) and 橘子 (tangerine) are both juzi, although with different tones, so it's an orange a day.)
I am very far from advanced and I don't guarantee correctness in my own Chinese, so bear that in mind.

Links
I've assembled various useful links proposed by the community under the cut here, and will try to update this regularly as more come up. Let me know if anything doesn't work!
