Because I was making soup the other day, have some Chinese names for (mostly Western) kitchen herbs and (mostly Chinese) ones. There are a few glitches in the hanzi and pinyin in the first link, but they look okay on the whole? Interesting to notice what a huge range 桂 covers in all its variations, from 桂花, my favorite osmanthus flowers, through 月桂 laurel and 肉桂 cinnamon and goodness knows what else.

Date: 2023-01-10 07:00 am (UTC)I understood one word in a hundred, yet kept watching video after video. Partly it was watching a master at work (my competence kink is showing), partly it was trying to figure out what things were, and also the videos had pretty good pacing (not too fast and not too slow).

Also, my usual (if somewhat circuitous) way of looking up noun terms is going to Wikipedia then switching to the Chinese article where available, mainly because it can net you useful notes about regional differences! To wit, from the pineapple entry: 菠萝(学名:Ananas comosus,马来西亚、新加坡称黄梨,台湾称凤梨)– aka the reason why we call pineapple tarts 凤梨酥 and polo buns 菠萝包 despite calling the fruit itself 黃梨 over here (plus an aside into it being a whole auspiciois thing for Chinese New Year due to a Hokkien pun to 旺来, but I digress).

Noted! I've been known to do that although my zh.wiki reading comprehension is not what it should be.

Love it. (凤梨/旺来 makes a nice overlap with the US Northeast tradition of the pineapple as a symbol of hospitality too...)

Date: 2023-01-10 07:07 am (UTC)I've got another cursed contribution, sorry: 多肉 (or more completely 多肉植物) for succulents (the plants)

Date: 2023-01-10 08:22 am (UTC)I guess if I try to think of 肉 as "flesh" rather than "meat," succulents are definitely very fleshy. I'd still rather not actually think about them that way, though...
