须 is one of those characters that do not want to stick. I know the word, but every time I see the character I go "???". *sigh*

I'm with you on this one. I did manage to remember what it was without looking it up, but only because the translation was right there and, like you, I do know the word -- by sound. I'm always forgetting the character, though. (I see Mandarin and Cantonese both pronounce 需 and 须 the same, which I know is part of the problem for me...)

(And this is going to just be me, but I also get confused about 必 because in Canto it's pronounced the same as 别 except with a different tone. High tone: "Must!" Low tone: "Don't!" Oy...)

That definitely doesn't help! But I wish I understood why my brain just sometimes is like, "this character you've seen dozens of times? nope, never seen it in my life!"

They're both kind of literary/formal in Canto anyway, so I don't have to worry about it too much... but that also means I don't get reminded of which is which all that often, either. XD

yeah, if writing by hand I'd be liable to mis-write 必须 as 必需, even though I have no trouble when reading.

Oy is right! (A 1-to-1 translation with 哎哟?) I'd have to fall back on context, which just might not be helpful...

I also wasn't sure what to make of the 得 in there. In context, it might be emphasis? Unless emphasis isn't one of the 9 million uses of 得...
