grayswandir: Chinese song lyrics. (language: 中文)
From: [personal profile] grayswandir
Oh, hah, 勞力 was a mistake, that should have been 努力 just like in Mandarin! (But I learned something from this mistake! I'd forgotten that 努 starts with "n." Canto almost always changes initial "n" to "l," so I've always heard it with "l" at the beginning, and was typing it wrong and confusing my keyboard input. In Canto, 勞 and 努 are pronounced lou4 and nlou5, so the only difference is tone, which... well, yeah, I honestly had forgotten they were even different words. XD )

I never saw 钟意 before and the characters make me think of someone worried about punctuality ;)

It does look like that! It's actually a different character in traditional, 鍾 rather than 鐘. I think 鍾意 for "like" is a Canto-only thing, but it looks like 鍾 has similar meanings in other compounds in Mandarin. Examples from Wiktionary:

鍾愛 / 钟爱 ― zhōng'ài ― to treasure
鍾情 / 钟情 ― zhōngqíng ― to fall in love
一見鍾情 / 一见钟情 ― yījiànzhōngqíng ― love at first sight

嚟 instead of 来

Oddly, of the two, 嚟 actually sounds more like how 来 is pronounced in Mandarin (嚟 = lai/lei, 来 = loi). It's funny to me that Canto uses a different word but it's a word that sounds more like the Mandarin word.

Oh hey I've heard 鍾意 in Canto before but didn't realise it was written like that!

And yeah, I think this particular usage is basically preserved only in specific instances for Mandarin – 情有独钟 is the only other one I can think of aside from the above list.

Oh hey I've heard 鍾意 in Canto before but didn't realise it was written like that!

For some reason, you saying this has just made me realize for the first time that I've seen 意 used the same way in other words, like 恶意, 诚意, 醋意. I originally just learned 鍾意 as a set phrase and pretty much ignored the characters, because every definition I've seen for 意 is so vague I can never get any kind of handle on it, and it shows up in a ton of words that barely seem related to me. But thinking about it, I guess 鍾意 actually does fall into a fairly regular pattern for naming emotions! From what you say, it sounds like 鍾 is mostly obsolete in Mandarin, so it makes sense that the word wouldn't be used, but I guess structurally it isn't actually that strange. I feel like I understand 意 a bit better now!

I don't think I've ever looked up 意 specifically but it's not surprising that it would be vague, at least in English – there probably isn't a way to succinctly express the range it covers, but yeah basically it's all psychological(?)-related, including concepts you wouldn't necessarily describe as emotions normally (see: 敌意, 杀意, 醉意… and on a more positive note, 乐意 and 愿意 are interesting ones in retrospect since they do fit the construction, but aren't used as nouns).

敌意, 杀意, 醉意

Oh, I didn't know any of these! Though the last one reminds me that I have heard 酒意, which I guess is similar? I can't find 杀意 in any of the dictionaries I use. Is it, like... feeling murderous, or...?

It's what anime subs would render as "killing intent", yes :P and 起了杀意/动了杀意 exists as a phrase as well.

Possibly coincidental, 乐意 and 愿意 are the ones that, as far as I know, don't exist in Japanese

…huh, I'm now realising that I don't actually know offhand if/how the equivalent sentiments would be expressed in JP. 喜んで?

On reflection, I think it may be because I learned di as part of earth/place etc. first, and that's the dominant meaning in my head. So every time I see the character I flash to that, then go 'wait no that doesn't make sense here' and have to go grubbing in my memory for other options.
