I think it should have been written as 他 anyway, since Shen Wei knows Da Qing.

Does Chinese use 他/她 for animals the speaker knows? (Curious because my students always seem very surprised/disbelieving when I tell them English uses he/she for animals we know, but that may just be because they've had "use 'it' for animals" drilled into them by their beginner level English teachers"!)

I don't know for sure. The impression I got when I looked it up was that 它 is more formally correct, but people do also use 他/她 for their pets.

Thought my thinking was that Da Qing isn't an animal; he's Yashou - and I just don't think he should get different pronouns depending on what shape he happens to be wearing.

IME 它 is pretty standard in written work (and subtitles) + I vaguely remember douqi talking about how when she translates baihe she defaults to “she” for pets/animals XD

You need to start pulling up some of those cute pet videos that are all over and asking your students "okay, does this strike you as a he or a she?" ;)

Though my thinking was that Da Qing isn't an animal; he's Yashou - and I just don't think he should get different pronouns depending on what shape he happens to be wearing.
Shen Wei can get away with it because everything is tā, of course, but even if they were pronounced differently I guess it would be in keeping with his disguise to use 它 here, since he's not _supposed_ to know Da Qing yet... . Pronouns for Yashou is an interesting issue! I wonder about the Flower Yashou too. I think in Taiwan they use 它 for inanimate objects and 牠 for animals, just to make it even more complicated.
(also for some reason this made me go look up whether the Murderbot books have been translated into Chinese, and if so what pronouns they use for Murderbot. Answer, according to Baidu: yes, and 我 first person, 它 third person.)
