I'm now trying to figure out whether there's just one 知道了 or actually two

My understanding was yes, there are two different ones. Both of which I arrived at more or less via osmosis, so idk how reliable that is, LOL.

And I'm sure I'd be feeling the other way around if I'd started with Chinese and was now moving on to Japanese.

I know next to nothing abotu Japanese, but going from Chinese to a language with umpty billion affixes has got to be a special kind of hell!

I wouldn't be surprised! It's such a different way to think about grammar (another pattern again from the grammatical complications of European languages...)
