Huh, now I'm wondering whether 多 is the solution to my perpetual problem in trying to figure out whether 很 is just there for grammatical reasons or actually meant to mean 'very'. Then again, if it's not used...

If there is a straightforward solution, I haven't come across one that works for me yet ;( . I tend to think "okay, 很 means 'at least somewhat, maybe more,'" and figure that if the speaker really means "very" (er, as it were) they'll add 多 or 真的 or 非常 or 特别 or... . (and there's always Z1L's favorite 还挺, "somewhat quite" as far as I can tell).

I just snorted out loud because that seems very... him. Google translate thinks it means 'kinda', but mileage on google translate seems to vary a lot for Chinese.
