第七天!Post a song, a saying, a quotation, something nice to look at, anything you like that's related to Chinese.

Playlist so far, 多亏了 presumenothing

I don't have much to offer today, it's kind of been a week, but a useful saying I learned recently: 静观其变, wait and see.

都好好照顾自己~~

I have been waiting for almost a week to share this:

Baby goats from Tumblr! With some small amount of (subbed) talking for practice.

Hello everyone! (初次见面,大家好,sorry to drop in unexpectedly but I have been reading [community profile] guardian_learning for a while and thought 第七天 might be as good a time to say hello as any? Thank you so much [personal profile] nnozomi for the super informative and helpful posts.)

I have been listening to 遇见, Stefanie Sun's breakout pop hit from 2003 - it is perfect for angsty timetravel OTPs (possibly a little softer than Weilan usually are, haha.)

Also, I have recently become aware of Chinese Wordle (you don't have to put in chengyu, any four words will do!)

希望大家周末愉快 <3

The closest I can think of is 多多益善… but admittedly I don't know if I'd use that for people?

Today's song: 野鳥 (sung by 金潤吉), from the soundtrack for The Bond, a show I have not seen. xD But I really enjoy this song, especially for the use of whistling in the orchestration.

Oooh, we just finished watching The Bond! I really liked all of the music they used; the show itself was pretty good, but on the heavier side.

I just watched this video which is a pretty clear explanation of the 的/得/地 rules! And apparently, each type of de has its own name so you can differentiate which one you mean in speech, which I didn't know. They also briefly touched on 是。。。的, which was discussed this week. I think it was this week? Time is fake. I'm looking forward to watching more of their videos (did someone link the Zero to Hero guys here? I can't remember, but if so, 谢谢, they're so useful!)

Oh, this is super helpful! Not necessarily in actually understanding the grammatical constructions, but definitely in picking the correct de. *g*

There was one bit where they said, if it's constructed this way, you use this de, but if you switch the word order, you have to use a different de, and I just about died because it's technically still being used in the same grammatical way, it's just... different word order so it has to be different. Whyyyyyyyyyyyyy

But at least I understand it a bit better now! I just have to know whether something is actually a noun or a verb, lol.

See, I don't think it's being used the same in those cases, it just looks like it from the English side ... there's a grammatical difference that doesn't come across in translation. *tears hair* But I'm glad for anything that helps in a practical way!

I wanted to say the same thing after I watched the video, but then I tried to figure out how to describe the difference in English and eventually just gave up. XD I feel like 得 does something that English has no equivalent for at all.

If so, then I have no idea what the difference is between them! 学习的认真,认真地学习, study diligently, diligently study... My brain says they mean the same thing, so if anyone has another explanation, I will gladly take it!

From: [personal profile] trobadora
Wait wait, it's 学习得认真, isn't it???

Hm, idk if that's right but how I'm reading it right now is that 认真地学习 is "diligently study" (adverb + verb) and 学习得认真 is "study in a diligent way" (verb + linking particle + adjective).

GDI I really have to look closer when I type the characters before hitting enter. You're right, it's 学习得认真.

But the meaning is basically the same, isn't it? The studying that occurs is diligent? *head explodes*

Yeah, essentially I think it's just two grammatically distinct ways of expressing the same thing, in the same way that the two English sentences mean essentially the same ...

grayswandir: Shen Wei looking at Zhao Yunlan. (Guardian: Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan)
From: [personal profile] grayswandir
I think I'd say the same thing [personal profile] trobadora said above, but it's definitely hard to explain... I feel like 得 means something like "in an X way" or "in such a way that X" or "to the point of being X." I guess it really is just a difference in grammar, as you said, the same as English can use either an adverb ("diligently") or an adverbial phrase ("in a diligent way") to say the same thing. But I think the thing is, even though the grammatical difference isn't really important with a single word like "diligent," it can be important when the description gets longer or more complicated/creative.

Like, there are some examples in [personal profile] presumenothing's post with 的/地/得 sentences from the Guardian novel where I don't think you could just move the words around and form an adverb with 地 instead (though maybe some of them you could):
下得没轻没重 | dosed/drugged 得 with no good sense (idiomatic: vastly overdosed them LOL)

呛得他流下泪来 | choked 得 his tears began falling (idiomatic: choked him to the point of tears)

浇灭得一丝灰烬也不剩 | extinguished 得 not one trace of ash remained (idiomatic: extinguished until there was nothing left)

刮得他眼眶有些泛红 | blew 得 the rim of his eyes reddened a little (idiomatic: …eye-watering wind? I guess?)

坐得松松垮垮 | sat 得 in a super slack/lax manner (idiomatic: sprawl, probably)

眼睛亮得惊人 | eyes bright 得 startling people (idiomatic: shockingly bright eyes)
I definitely can't come up with any examples of my own in Mandarin. XD But I'm thinking of sentences in English like "she explained it in such a way that even laymen could understand," where the "in such a way that..." part does function as an adverb, but you have to use this different grammatical structure, because you can't make an adverb out of that whole phrase...

Thank you for explaining it so well, it really is so much clearer once you get away from things that can be expressed with a simple adverb!

Thank you! I think I've definitely not been thinking big picture enough with this, which is easy to do when the tutorials only give short, simple examples that work either way!

I've been listening through Wang Kai's singing back catalogue because his voice. Lots of goodies, but I particularly enjoy this song from The Disguiser, 诉衷情 (though I have not seen the show).
