In Malaysia we just call buses 巴士 ...

No question 巴士 is way easier to pronounce and write, oh dear. Maybe also used in Cantonese? I know I've seen it before--here's a picture from New York taken (not by me) quite a while back, look on the right for the bus company sign :) https://nnozomi.dreamwidth.org/file/502346.jpg

Yeah, interesting! Maybe it is from dialect. My other thought was that public transport is pitiably poor in Malaysia, so perhaps makes sense not to call it 公共汽车 -_-

Oh dear! :( Fair enough. (I have issue with the other half of the word, I'm used to 汽车 being steam-train in Japanese...)

It is, and I think I remember presumenothing mentioned using it too, when it came up before at some point. Wiktionary calls 巴士 "regional"...

That makes sense! I think you're right, I had completely forgotten that, whoops. I wish Mandarin would pick it up more, then, such an easy word compared to the official ones.
