2. A question! For Reasons, I'm looking for a chengyu or other type of traditional saying that would mean something like "not all gifts are to be welcomed," or "beware of Greeks bearing gifts" or even "don't trust gifts that come with strings attached." Basically, expressing a feeling that an offered gift [in this case, because it comes from a certain person] may not be as welcome/innocuous as it appears. I've gone down some rabbit holes of searching, but haven't found anything about gifts that implies something negative. Is there any saying that might fit this?

No idea about the gift chengyu but I will keep looking! The closest I could find with a quick google was 币重言甘, which apparently hints at using presents/flattery to buy someone off? Hopefully someone better informed than me will chime in.
