Kinda surprised to see 不如 listed with this meaning – it's used for comparisons, yes, but I feel like I more commonly see it in the "might as well [do this other thing]" 与其…不如… sense instead?

Ah, so you can do that in Mandarin! I had wanted to say something about it before, but then when I checked Wiktionary their example sentence for this usage was in Cantonese, so I figured it was just a Canto thing. Good to know that's not the case!

Odd that they didn't also include a Mandarin one then! Since the only common alternative I can think of is maybe 干脆[action], but that isn't exactly the same either.

Me too! My thought was "this is both confusing and rare, why is it in here at level 2" but who am I to argue with HSK.
