Not a whole lot today, it’s being a week. This Wikipedia page on exclamative particles is kind of neat, although there are some that make me go ?. (Also I don’t think they have one of my favorites, 嘘, which is “shhh” in Chinese and “lie” (untruth) in Japanese.)

驾, jià, Spoken command for a horse to increase in speed, comparable to English "hyah!" or "giddyup!"

Aha, I'd been wondering what that was! I kept hearing it in Border Town Prodigal, but I don't think it was ever in the subtitles.

That list is pretty neat, I enjoyed reading through it. I was thinking 哟 was another one they'd missed, but I guess that's probably because the exclamation form is two characters, 哎哟 rather than just 哟.

“lie” (untruth) in Japanese.)

I think 虛 (without the mouth radical) is sort of "lie" in Chinese ("false, empty, vain"), so they might be kind of the same? I know 虛偽/虚伪 ("hypocritical, artificial"), and it looks like there's also e.g. 虛假/虚假 ("false") and 虛幻/虚幻 ("illusory, unreal"). So, similar, at least?

I didn't know about 嘘 as "shhh," but that makes sense!

Yeah, I don't think it's in the Chinese hardsubs of Border Town Prodigal. I think my first encounter with 驾 was in Shaw Eleven Lang. I knew it by sound, and now seeing the character, it makes so much sense!

Yeah! And the opposite too, when they're stopping their horses - I looked at one point, but couldn't find the character ...

If it's a "yu" sound you're referring to, this is fairly commonly written as 吁 imo, but a search also turns up other variations like 驭 from 驾驭.

驾 on the other hand seems unanimous, and yes as everyone's noted, I don't think either ever appears on subtitles!

Yes, I should have said, it's "yu"! Thank you for that, I couldn't find it at all.

Wiktionary says:
yū, yú (yu1, yu2)
(Mainland China) (used to stop animals from advancing) whoa!

Huh. I know I'm bad with tones, but I would never have guessed first tone.

(It being - sometimes - written as the other half of 驾驭 makes a lot of sense to me!)

哎 is ai to me, whereas ei would be more like 诶? But this is probably a case where pronunciations aren't really uniform to start with, heh.

Also, I never did think about the 虚 in JP 嘘 either XD

哟 feels like its own different thing from 哎哟 imo, I'm kinda surprised it's not listed (or alternatively as 唷 or 呦…)

That's a very neat list. I'm kinda tempted to make myself a vocab deck from those, since I doubt many of them are going to show up in most vocab learning lists (and I'm amused by the thought of randomly yelling out some of these in the name of memorising them...).

Probably not as effective as me actually making little cards with them, but still...

Since everyone's having fun with them, the general term for these exclamations is 感叹词 or more simply 叹词, and the EN-CN example sentences on the Baidu page may be of particular interest… whereas this other list is so exhaustive I've barely seen a quarter of these.
