This line was in Lighting Up the Stars, which I went to see yesterday. I remember it because it was one of the few lines I understood without relying on the subtitles...because it's only 3 words. :)

I looked around a little, and there seems to be a decent answer here on StackExchange in reply to someone who asked about these words. (I was curious too, especially since Cantonese doesn't use 懂, and often substitutes 明 in places where I think Mandarin would use 懂... but also often substitutes 明 in place of 明白... and Wiktionary tells me that a Cantonese synonym for 懂 is 识, but I think of that as the Canto equivalent of 会... so basically 懂 is a complete mystery to me. XD )

Thank you for digging that up! Now that I'm reading the comments there, it's true that 明白 would sound very weird in some sentences - the things you absorb just by listening! *g* It being about communication makes sense to me.

谢谢! As always super helpful. I need to go back and read through more thoroughly, but I'm getting the idea that very roughly speaking, 明白 is intellectual understanding and 懂 can be both intellectual and emotional understanding...?

...Hilariously, I ran across a Cantonese usage of 懂 like two hours after leaving that comment. XD

(I feel like they're never exactly false cognates, since words can always be used with their Mandarin meanings in written/formal/archaic language, so it's kind of like... modern English usage vs. 16th-century English usage, maybe?)

Right, like that! Or like issue (flow), traffic (trade), taper (candle)... Though it seems to be kind of a toss-up which language will be the one sticking to the literary/archaic usage in any given case!
