Even after researching it for Intelligible, I'm still not entirely clear on some of the nuances here, alas 😅

Me neither. I've heard both "using 汉语 is better because that shows that it's not the language of everyone in China" and "using 汉语 is WORSE because it's not 'Chinese' as in the language of everyone in China," and I have no idea where to start. Also 华语 more as a term used by overseas Chinese ie 华侨, but I don't know if that's a universal understanding either...

I was just looking at DVD listings a few minutes ago and was reminded of 国语 as another option (though this apparently refers to any national language, e.g. it means Korean if you're talking about Korea, and apparently in Taiwan it specifically means Taiwanese Mandarin as contrasted with 普通話...). Wiktionary also suggests 中国话, which seems pretty neutral and clear to me, as referring specifically to the "national language of China," but I don't know if that one is in common usage. I've heard all the others, but can't remember hearing 中国话...

国语! I would never have thought of that one because I'm so used to associating it with "Japanese class in Japan." I wonder if it's used in schools in the same way.
