I was the other way around, I mostly only knew it from 拜托!

In traditional characters, these are actually two separate characters! 托 is to hold/support, 託 is to entrust or depend on (and means "request/ask" in 拜托). But 託 got simplified to 托, so in simplified characters they're the same word now.

(Funnily enough, I knew both meanings but didn't realize they were separate characters until I went to look up 拜託 just now. "To support" and "to rely on" seem like such closely related ideas, I just always thought of it as one of those characters that can mean two opposite things, like 借 meaning both "borrow" and "lend." And then 拜托 goes with the "entrust/rely on" meaning, like you're requesting someone to take on a task/responsibility for you. I just saw it as, like, asking the other person to take over supporting/upholding something. So I thought they were the same word!)

(My guess would be that they were originally the same word sometime back in history, hence the same pronunciation, but then the separate meanings diverged into two characters... and now they're back to sharing one character again.)

That was really interesting!! I also integrated the "ask" meaning to the "support" side in the same way as you, with the image of asking someone to support something.
