Finger shapes for counting to ten in Chinese; one to five are pretty straightforward but six to ten are Chinese-specific (as far as I know; Japanese definitely uses different ones). Like everything else in China, they vary by south/north/Taiwan/etc.

I'm always fascinated that China does 1 the same way America does, which is totally counterintuitive to me as someone used to the European gesture. (We start with the thumb.)

Huh, do you mean for counting or just showing a single number? Wikipedia says counting in China does start with the thumb, and that's how I've seen most of my students here do it. They'll show the index finger to simply indicate the number one, but if they're counting up from one to a higher number, they start with the thumb. (I feel like using just the thumb to indicate the number one could be confusing, since it could look like giving the other person a thumbs-up sign. But that might just be because I'm thinking about teaching small kids, so giving a thumbs-up is a pretty common thing to do/expect. Probably less true in other contexts. XD)

Both for counting and for showing a single number! Giving a thumbs-up wasn't a thing where I was growing up, not when I was a kid, at least - I have no idea about nowadays tbh.

Thanks for the number links! I still don't know all of these, but I've had to get used to some of them since I started working in HK, since I'm supposed to have all my students introduce themselves with their names and ages every day, and sometimes they're lazy or bored with the daily repetition (or afraid to speak English) and will just use the finger signs to show me how old they are. I knew the signs for 6 and 10 from seeing them in movies, but didn't know 7 until my students kept using it (they do the "coastal southern China" version mentioned on Wikipedia, making the shape of the number 7). I don't think I've seen any students try to show me 8 or 9 with hand signs (if they have, I didn't get it!). And I think in movies I've seen both versions of 0.

Wikipedia says Hong Kong does 3 the same way as the US, but in my actual experience I'd say it's about a 50/50 split between kids who will show me the index/middle/ring and kids who will show me the middle/ring/pinky. And because these kids are 3, they're usually very sure only one version is right, so if I hold up what they believe are the wrong three fingers, they will correct me. XD Some kids have also gotten confused by my counting, since I start with the index finger, but they start with the thumb. I try to remember to start with my thumb now so as not to confuse anyone!
