what is the distinction between 店 and 馆 when discussing shops?
I can't find a reputable source discussing this and am not 100% certain myself, but I think 店 is a shop in general and 馆 is used to indicate a "hall of something," including for non-commercial places like 博物馆 or 图书馆. I think the specific usages for restaurants and hotels, which seem to use both in different terms (饭馆，饭店，酒店，旅馆 and so on), are unique idioms. You might also consider making this a separate post, where people who know more than me would be more likely to see it.
