Plenty of the SHL instances I looked up had 已经 without 了; I don't think it's always that straightforward ... (Is anything ever? *tears hair*)

Possibly the saddest example you could have picked :( I have a feeling there are a lot of dramas featuring something along the lines of 已经...死了...

Yes, and that is so true about 已经 in The Rebel. I found a few more examples that were all along those lines...
