sakana noticed the CGTN logo and looked it up, she says it's an English-language channel of CCTV. Maybe they went through the list of Chunwan performers to find people who could speak English well enough for a short interview? (I wonder why he sounds sort of British? Teachers from Hong Kong? /ignorant)

Don't quote me on this, but my impression is that British is still considered the prestige accent even in mainland China, so I wouldn't be surprised if the better schools/programs mostly teach British English (I'm not sure, though, and also I have no idea how/when/where he learned English, so who knows...).

Date: 2024-02-14 10:15 pm (UTC)He did! He sang something with Mao Xiaotong and a couple of people I've never heard of. Here's the first link I grabbed: https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1WZ421m7fe/?spm_id_from=333.337.search-card.all.click (Nice tenor range, good ear, no projection ;) )

Ah, that makes sense! I'm also curious about how/when/where he learned English. I'm so used to Japan where the only people to speak anywhere near fluent English are either the super-educational-elite and/or have lived abroad for long periods (and even then few of them have British accents). China's system still seems to work differently.

Date: 2024-02-14 11:09 pm (UTC)Ah, thank you! For some reason I can't get the link to work (even by deleting the part after the question mark), and I couldn't find anything by searching Bilibili either (I keep just getting interviews about the performance), but I was able to find it on YouTube at least. I guess it will never cease to surprise me that practically every Chinese actor can also sing...
