Guardian:
不至于引起那么多人的觊觎, it's not enough for so many people to get their hopes up
就算是感情再不好,也不至于这么冷冰冰, even if she's not happy about it, she doesn't have to be that cold
从概率上来判断千万亿次才会发现一次这样的情况, in terms of probability this is a one-in-a-hundred-billion situation

Me:
不至于你那么生气吧。
在天空有多少星星,一亿多吗?

Yes, that sounds way more likely. And don't you love it when you've got to do mental arithmetic every time there's a big number, like [a hundred][ten thousand]... *brain calculating*... that's a million!

Huh. The dictionary definitely says it's a hundred million, which is neither of the definitions of a billion!

Oh, weird. Yeah, all the dictionaries I've got on Pleco also say a hundred million (or, in archaic usage, a hundred thousand). Ditto Wiktionary. Maybe someone was just confused about what a billion means?

I think this is one of the first times there was a page where they set out to compare the differences between two similar phrases/words and explain how to use them that I actually understood it easily.

Yeah, same in Korean. Except that for small numbers, there are 2 sets of numbers, each with a specific use.

I don't think it's parallel with Japanese.

In Korean, both sets of numbers can be used with counters, just not the same counters. For instance, you use Native Korean numbers for hours, but Sino-Korean numbers for minutes and seconds.

Oh, wow. I have enough trouble with numbers as it is. That sounds nuts. o_O

A little bit, yes, but my main trouble is to remember how to say 20, 30... and 90 in Native Korean numbers, since I don't use them often. In Sino-Korean numbers, it's of course [2][10], [3][10]... and [9][10] like in Chinese and in Japanese, so it's way easier.
