To the best of my knowledge 河 and 江 are pretty interchangeable with 河 being more common in the north and 江 being more common in the south. (and of course if there is a specific one attached to your specific river you should use that I suppose!)

I don't know about 川, I don't think I've ever encountered it before.

I feel like 川 shows up in set phrases, so it might be archaic/literary? One phrase I've run across a few times is 川流不息, "flowing past in an endless stream." (Looking it up just now, I see that Wiktionary says this phrase usually refers to traffic, but I've mostly heard used poetically in song lyrics...)

哈哈哈 oh dear, what a waste of a lovely 成语. Just as well the song lyrics are making use of it. I'm going to think of this one when I cross streets now.

I don't know about 川, I don't think I've ever encountered it before.
I'm more familiar with it because it's the standard word for "river" in Japanese (also there's 四川, I guess).
