I just went and looked up some example sentences for 层 as "layer" to add to my flashcards, since I feel like I keep forgetting that meaning -- I always think of it as a level/strata/rank or a floor of a building. Some useful-looking Mandarin examples I found with 层 as a layer/coating:

涂上一层油漆。
*"Apply a layer of paint."*

牛奶上面结了一层皮。
*"A skin has formed on the milk."*

机器蒙上了一层灰尘。
*"The machine was coated with dust."*

地面被一层雪覆盖住了。
*"The earth was covered in a layer of snow."*

湖面上凝结了一层薄冰。
*"A thin layer of ice formed over the lake."*

For the "layer" meaning I found this in Lost Tomb Reboot, episode 3:
有一层像蛋白一样的东西
and:
你看一直往下 一层一层的

This one from episode 7 seems to be the "strata" meaning:
岩层里到处都是

For the "floor" meaning, there are lots of 层 in the Warehouse 11 arc. A couple from episode 24:
我怎么能下到二层
and:
你为什么一直待在一层? 二层太危险了。

...A layer of something like egg white??

岩层

Oh, neat. (I just learned 岩 recently and keep forgetting what it is. Maybe learning 岩层 would help me remember...)

蛋白 (or 蛋白质) is also protein, though I'm not sure that's any more encouraging.

岩 = Rocks (Mountain Edition) XD

Also, just to add that 层 is used for non-physical layers too – see 层次感 etc.

I thought of that, but it made even less sense. XD

岩 = Rocks (Mountain Edition) XD

Oh my lord, so it is. I guess that shows how great my observations skills are. XDDD I learned (Cantonese) 啱 ages ago, and it has nothing to do with rocks so I guess I got used to totally ignoring the components of the character (like so many things, I can read it but absolutely could not have written it or said what it looked like), so when I encountered 岩 it just looked like "that word I already know, but without the mouth radical and with a totally different meaning," and I never bothered to think about what it was actually made of.

I guess I'll probably remember it now. XD

………no actually you're completely valid there tbh – even as someone who already is accustomed to the whole components/meanings correspondence in Mandarin, Canto characters (especially the non-noun ones, how is 嚟 in any way shape or form 来) are just "match this shape to the sound I have registered in my head", 翻桌子

Yay! It looks like what it is! <3

Oh, that's good to know! Thank you.

A layer of something like egg white??

:D I had to go look this up in the source. Pangzi is talking about a mural. The iQiyi translation is "a layer of protein-like stuff." I don't have Pleco to hand just now, but Google Translate is giving me the following for 蛋白: protein, albumen, egg white.
