A layer of something like egg white??

:D I had to go look this up in the source. Pangzi is talking about a mural. The iQiyi translation is "a layer of protein-like stuff." I don't have Pleco to hand just now, but Google Translate is giving me the following for 蛋白: protein, albumen, egg white.

Egg white/egg tempera? seems to have been a thing for painting protection (from a very quick general google/wikipedia look), so it makes sense!
