Pretty straightforward but good to know?
Guardian:
这地星人也是人 (Dixingren are people too)
我每次都选择相信你。我也不知道为什么。(I choose to trust you every time. I don't know why either.)
我也是奶奶带大的 (I was brought up by my grandmother too)
My practice:
我也爱吃巧克力蛋糕,以后一起吃吧
如果他们也不会去,结果没人是去的。
悲伤也好,痛苦也好 (吴邪的歌,;( )
(Quick note to avoid confusion: this is guardian_learning because it was originally made for a related purpose and I didn't feel like changing the name, also the Guardian script etc. is what I have on hand and know best, but Guardian is definitely a starting point rather than a required topic! People have been kindly bringing quotes/references from 山河令, MDZS/CQL, DMBJ etc. here and there, plus outside of dramas we have experts on Zhou Shen, Andy Lau and so on, absolutely anything welcome.)

Date: 2022-02-03 06:14 pm (UTC)这里的人最喜欢用酒麻醉自己。你也不是不知道。 (I actually would have expected 用來 rather than just 用, as in 用酒來麻醉自己, or maybe even 用酒去麻醉自己, but it's not in the subtitles, so I guess it's not necessary?)
我也很想揍他一顿。(Heh, that last phrase was new to me. 揍一顿: to beat up, with 顿 I guess working as a classifier for "occurrences of events," such as... beating someone up.)
(你当我是刘德华的专家,我真的很高兴。XD)

Date: 2022-02-04 01:13 am (UTC)I'd have gone with 用酒來 there too haha.
Hadn't actually put any thought to 一顿's usage before this but yeah it does both and I'm laughing at the ratio of food to scolding in these example sentences.

Date: 2022-02-04 02:01 am (UTC)That is a really neat point I would never have picked up on--sort of 来 as causative?
你当我是刘德华的专家,我真的很高兴。
当然呢!:)

Date: 2022-02-04 08:10 am (UTC)Exactly, yeah. 用...來..., "use X in order to Y." But I don't know -- I don't have any drama scripts, but I just looked through a bunch of song lyrics, and most uses of 用 were followed by X + Y directly, without 來 in between, so maybe it's used more in speech than writing, or maybe it's another thing that's used more in the south? I did find some examples of 用來 in song lyrics, but not very many. And the ones I found are in sentences I have no idea how to translate. XD To wit:
用努力来往上调整 (use hard work to... ???? I truly have no idea)
万载用热诚来等待 (I remember asking my language partner about this line, and she said 用热诚 should translate more like an adverb, as in "waiting passionately for ten thousand years," or maybe "waiting with passion," rather than "using passion in order to wait")
用你心来尽握一生一世 (use your heart to... completely grasp life???)
用上念力来麻醉 (use... willpower??... to numb yourself?)
Meanwhile I know I've heard 去 + [verb] a lot in song lyrics, but looking over examples now, it looks like it isn't necessarily causative, it just... seems to sort of function as an infinitive? Wiktionary says 去 can mean "to" or "in order to," which seems like it should be causative, but these are the kinds of uses I found in the lyrics I was looking at (translations are just my best guess and could be totally wrong):
用爱念去一一解咒 (use love to undo the curses one by one) [causative, I think]
无谓去每步计算太好 (it's no use to calculate every step too well) [...infinitive?]
甜梦我是无法去制止 (I have no way to control the sweet dream) [purpose?? "by means of which to..."??]
流浪在半生怎去预备 (how to prepare to wander for half a lifetime) [infinitive??]
张开手去抱他 (open your arms to embrace him) [causative? or purpose?]
深深的伤口不想去医 (a deep wound [that I] don't want to heal) [infinitive??]
Maybe I should actually pick up a grammar book at some point instead of just trying to infer usage from all the random examples I happen to run across... :P

Date: 2022-02-04 10:45 am (UTC)There's a comparison to be made with に soooomewhere in there, I think (a more general-purpose version of 〜しに行く?) ………but I've had so many meetings today that 我脑子也 offline 了 so who knows. And also Chinese is just far more amenable to randomly dropping words without the particle squad coming after you.
