Oh, good question, that's something I've been wondering about for a while!

They're somewhat interchangeable, except that 身边 also covers less literal/immediate uses that 身旁 doesn't. To borrow the examples from this answer:

我身旁还有两个孩子 (there are physically two children next to me right now)

我身边还有两个孩子 (could also mean abstractly, e.g. two kids living with me but not necessarily here right now)

And also because it came up on shuffle while typing this, Zhou Shen's livestream concert last year was (punnily) titled 想到你“深”边, which is rather demonstrably appropriate since it's virtually 身边ing.

Thank you for the explanation! So does that mean all those lyrics I keep hearing with 你在我身旁 (or vice versa) are about wanting someone right here right now, rather than, well, by your side in a more abstract/general sense?

Ahhh, I should've looked at the latest entry before I replied to the comment from yesterday's! Now I'm even more confused by 必须得! So I'll cheat and re-use the same example. :D

Me too! There were one or two examples of it in the Guardian script too. Double "must" for emphasis???

Regarding 必须得, the dictionary says 必须 can also mean "necessarily", so maybe this is "necessarily must"?
