会, be going to

https://resources.allsetlearning.com/chinese/grammar/Expressing_%22will%22_with_%22hui%22

(now that we've had a chance to recover from 会,be able to...)

Guardian:
不行,赵云澜他不会同意的 (That's no good, Zhao Yunlan will not agree.)
我就知道你会这么说的 (I knew you would say that)
我杀敌的时候会害怕。(I'm going to be afraid when I kill the enemy [I think this is a common usage that feels unintuitive to me, using 会=future where English would use the habitual present tense, I'm afraid when I... . Corrections please as needed.)

My practice:
我困得不行,我会一秒之后睡觉。(so sleepy I had to edit this phrase to get it to make any sense, in fact)
他已经请假了,明天不会上班。

(Also don't miss the 的得地 quiz with Zhao Yunlan in the previous post!)

I think this is a common usage that feels unintuitive to me, using 会=future where English would use the habitual present tense

I have no insight into the Chinese use, but you can do something similar in English - "will" future can be habitual, too: "Every time I kill an enemy, I'll be afraid" ...

Yeah, I can't really hear "will" as habitual present either, even though it does parallel how "would" works in English for past events ("every time I saw him, I would say hello"). Once it becomes a habitual "will," it seems like it has to refer to future habits, not present ones.

For me 会="will" does sort of intuitively work as a present-habitual thing if I think of the structure like an if-then clause -- like, "if X happens, Y will happen," except that instead of "if," it's "whenever / every time / when." "Whenever there is X, there will be Y." "If/when I kill an enemy, I will be afraid." Granted, the "will" ends up feeling sort of hypothetical this way, which is probably not quite right, but it does feel habitual in the sense of being the expected result under the given conditions. 反正就是我的想法。。。

On the one hand I get where this point is coming from but on the other… hmm 会 doesn't really feel future-y to me in the Guardian sentences? Honestly the closest thing I'd compare these to is conditionals and friends (「君ならきっとそう言います」「敵を殺すたびに怖くなる」orrrr yeah the grammar in those doesn't look quite right but you get what I mean)

Everyone's having the usual deep discussions and I'm just over here, fizzily pleased that I could read all of the Guardian example sentences
