第一百二十三天

语法
了 to show "already"

Sometimes I miss good old agglutinative verb endings instead of the infinite rearrangement of individual characters...

词汇
高, high (also 高兴, happy) 高 gāo, high (also 高兴 gāoxìng, happy)

Guardian:
我们都知道了,别遮遮掩掩了, we know already, stop trying to keep secrets
早跟你说了,别让你成天和外面的野猫玩儿, I already told you not to spend all day playing with stray cats
别高兴得太早啊, don't get happy too soon.

Me:
我昨天问了,没收到回答。
我身高不高,太不方便了。

我知道了 is common enough that I picked up on this use of 了 without being consciously aware of it ... so many different uses!

As for 高, the fact that the very first thing that popped up in my mind was 山高水远 probably says something about my viewing habits, LOL.

A truly inescapable sentiment if you're trying to learn Chinese, LOL.

I'm now trying to figure out whether there's just one 知道了 or actually two

My understanding was yes, there are two different ones. Both of which I arrived at more or less via osmosis, so idk how reliable that is, LOL.

And I'm sure I'd be feeling the other way around if I'd started with Chinese and was now moving on to Japanese.

I know next to nothing abotu Japanese, but going from Chinese to a language with umpty billion affixes has got to be a special kind of hell!

You're right that there's kinda two meanings here – I don't think there's a clear-cut default in this case, but I would probably assume the "roger that" meaning unless otherwise indicated by context words (我早就知道了 etc) or said in a sarcastic tone (the universal(?) "yeah got it got it" tone of all children everywhere on being nagged by their parents for the twentyhundredth time).

True! And I'm sure I'd be feeling the other way around if I'd started with Chinese and was now moving on to Japanese.

それなー

(though as a somewhat-related aside, I do find the… Venn-diagram-y overlaps?… between 分かる/知る and 知道/了解 mildly fascinating)

Insert me thinking longingly of my learning Latin days here... Ok, so that's not as agglutinative, but just... tenses and plurals and everything nicely consistent...

I've heard Things about Ancient Greek, so I'm staying well clear 😂
