Now that actually writing stuff doesn't happen anymore, I'm half convinced the real benefit of familiarity with stroke order is the fact that it does help when trying to decipher handwriting…

Yes, I think I was actually told this in some version or other when originally learning Japanese (probably because my Japanese professor was having enough trouble reading my handwriting already...)
