It's a bit different because it's a final particle and can only come at the end of a sentence, but it tends to come at the end of sentences that would have a 了 in them if they were in Mandarin. *laughing-crying emoji*
oy vey, or rather 哎哟! Can't get away from it ;) (although hopefully the two particles will illuminate one another a bit...)
