I'm pretty sure I was taught with regard to Japanese that there was no visible/writable difference between 月 月 and 肉 月 as radicals, just that the actual derivation was different and that's why all the internal organs had moons on them. So yeah, it may be a traditional-only thing.

(Tangentially, it reminds me of manufacturers' frequent tendency to typo 内蔵, built in, as
内臓, internal organs--the difference is just the 月. Unintentional anthropomorphizing?)
