lol yup. Really need to find a history somewhere of how the various modern words (technological words, back-borrowings from Japanese like 民主 and 浪漫, and so on) got started...).

If you look into the etymology, I'd be very curious!

On a quick google, the best article I found was in Japanese, but it looks like 机 （機） originally meant, like, a mechanical contraption, the spring in a crossbow (or some kind of bow, I don't know the terms) and thereafter a weaving loom; that got used both as "machine" in general and "thing that leads to movement," as in 机会 etc.
