I - not having any gut feeling about the language to speak of - often just stuck to that one rule above, that 就 needs 了, while 才 doesn't. So some of these sentences, I assume, are there to force you to choose one or the other, simply depending on the presence of 了. Which is not very helpful when you're trying to speak, and come up with a whole sentence on your own. *sigh*
