You're right, I have no idea! I have it as 就 in my notes. Maybe I got it wrong and forgot to correct it? I totally follow your argument here. He only studied late in life, because he worked for a few years before. What do I know?

I do remember our discussion about this sentence, and I think the teacher confused us with that one, too. I do think the assumption is that "two or three times a year" is less than expected, and that's why he said it should be 才.
But the more exercises we made about it, the more arbitrary it seemed to me - depending on one's feelings about the issue, one could use one or the other. *shrug*
